Galaxy Travel Limited - Company History
The name, Galaxy Travel, was originally that of a small travel agency with two branches at North Walsham in Norfolk and Nelson Street, Norwich. Eastern Counties Bus Company purchased these two branches, together with other market town agencies between 1986 and 1993 to add to two existing travel offices owned by the bus company based in Norwich and Ipswich.

The other market town agencies included Baxter Travel at Holt, Wymondham Travel, the Countryman Travel group in Suffolk (Beccles, Halesworth and Framlingham), as well as shops at Aylsham and Attleborough.

In 1989 a company was set up within Eastern Counties to run the travel agencies and the Galaxy Travel name was adopted.

In 1995 this company became independent from Eastern Counties, and in 1996 was bought out by one of its original directors, Steve Dawson, together with his wife, Sandra. In the same year the company expanded dramatically, when it bought out the travel agency - Catours Travel chain, owned by the Norwich and Peterborough Building Society.

The purchase of Catours Travel added six new branches to the group located at Downham Market, March, Whittlesey, Bourne, Spalding and Holbeach.

In 1998 the branch at Wisbech, formerly Andrew's Travel, was also acquired.

In early 1999 all the branches, some of which had continued to operate under their original names, were all branded as Galaxy Travel.

Geoff Blagg joined as Managing Director in 2000, and since then the company has continued to expand, adding three new branches at Exchange Street in central Norwich, the Butter Market in central Ipswich, and Catton Grove, formerly Global Express, in Norwich.

The move of the company's head office in 2002 to Cringleford Business Centre also saw that office open as a branch, initially to administer and develop the business travel and Galaxy Club operations. A sophisticated website and call centre have also been added to the company as part of this move.

Galaxy's commitment to growth in the future will be built on the same solid foundations as it has in the past with a committed and enthusiastic team, a determination to offer the best possible service to its customers, and a pride in the independence which sets it apart from most of its competitors.
